The Men’s Anti-violence Network (M.A.N.)

The Men’s Anti-violence Network (M.A.N.) is a group of business and community leaders dedicated to stopping domestic violence by holding the abuser accountable and working on prevention efforts. M.A.N.'s focus is on changing public policy and increasing public awareness. It is an initiative of the Arizona Foundation for Women (AFW).

AFW founder, Marilyn Seymann, had a vision of getting men involved in the domestic violence issue...getting men to talk to men. When she and two other Board members, Jeanne Herberger and Michelle Robson, began approaching some of the most prominent community leaders in 2000, the response was phenomenal.

Much of the focus in domestic violence has, rightfully, been on the victim. M.A.N.’s efforts have been to expand the focus to include prevention--through public awareness, educating our children, and dealing with the abuser.

Some of the state’s most high-profile leaders have joined the cause and the group now boasts over 100 members and advisors. This group is one of the most influential groups in Arizona. M.A.N. representatives have been asked to sit on the Governor’s Commission for Prevention of Family Violence, Maricopa County Association of Governments’ DV Commission, Employers Against Domestic Violence, and the Attorney General’s Offender Treatment Task Force.

The group’s founding co-chairs are two highly respected men in our state, Andy Federhar, a partner with Fennemore Craig and Gary Herberger, president of Herberger Enterprises. The current chairman is Tom Ambrose of the Phoenix Suns. Under their leadership, M.A.N. has become a hands-on, action-oriented group, producing public service announcements, hosting training sessions, piloting prevention programs, and pursuing an ambitious legislative agenda at the state capitol each year. M.A.N. remains a unique organization; men who are standing up to say that domestic violence is unacceptable in our community. It is a model program, the first of its kind in the country.
